PROJECT DETAILS:

Coating and surface engineering technologies enhance the performance of underlying substrates by imparting novel functionalities, improving durability, and increasing overall added value. Conducted in collaboration with the NSERC Multisectoral Industrial Research Chair in Coatings and Surface Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, the proposed project aims to develop a new generation of environmentally benign vapor-phase deposition processes for the fabrication of nanostructured coatings with tailored physicochemical properties. These advanced coatings are intended for applications across strategic sectors of critical importance to Quebec and Canada, including aerospace (protective coatings for aircraft engine components), energy efficiency (smart glazing systems for next-generation sustainable buildings), healthcare optics (high-performance optical coatings for ophthalmic lenses), and industrial manufacturing (advanced valve coatings for the energy, mining, and petrochemical industries).

Beyond technological development, the project seeks to advance the fundamental understanding of the physicochemical mechanisms governing nanomaterial synthesis and growth. Particular emphasis is placed on investigating the relationships between processing parameters, nanostructure evolution, and resulting functional properties, including optical, mechanical, and tribological performance. The outcomes are expected to contribute to the design of high-value, application-specific coating systems with enhanced reliability, efficiency, and sustainability.
