This project aims to recycle carbon black from end-of-life tires using an environmentally responsible vacuum pyrolysis process and to functionalize it for use as a reinforcing filler in industrial thermoplastics and 3D printing materials.
Carbon black is widely used in plastics because of its UV-absorbing properties, which improve material durability. Vacuum pyrolysis offers a sustainable alternative to tire combustion by converting waste tires into three valuable products: carbon black, oil, and gases.
The process developed by the industrial partner Pyrovac is autothermal, with the gases produced supplying the required heat, making it both energy-efficient and environmentally friendly while minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The expected outcomes are highly significant for Canada and beyond, as this zero-emission, economically viable recycling technology could support the development of new sustainable tire recycling policies.
The project will also train highly qualified personnel, including three PhD students, one postdoctoral researcher, and six undergraduate students.
