Efficient Manufacturing of Thermoplastic Composites for Aerospace Applications

PROJECT DETAILS:
The proposed design space will investigate the forming of composite parts with depths ranging from 1 to 4 inches, considering various stamping angles and radii. Additional parameters will be evaluated to assess part quality, including wrinkling, fiber orientation, resin flow and adaptation, as well as final part thickness.
The objective is to validate process simulation tools within the defined design space by analyzing key parameters such as the primary radius, typical laminate thickness/configuration, and part depth. Composite coupons will be manufactured and characterized to validate the accuracy of the process simulations. These validated simulation tools will then support the design phase of the complete fuel tank cover, reducing the number of experimental trials required to validate a potential part design.
