Development of multilayer structures made from eco-friendly materials for automotive interiors

In this multi-partner project, the NRCC, in collaboration with its industrial partners, will develop ultra-lightweight, partially bio-based polymer composite structures to replace the materials currently used in certain vehicle interior components: dashboards, overhead systems, door panels, etc. This unique development of eco-friendly semi-structural materials will be made possible by integrating Canadian cellulosic fibers and carbon fibers recycled in the United States. The use of these two types of reinforcements will result in significant weight reduction compared to current parts (up to 60%) while maintaining comparable performance and competitive costs. The formulations and manufacturing methods for these laminated composite structures will be developed and optimized on a laboratory and semi-industrial scale in NRCC laboratories; the technology will then be scaled up to an industrial level by the project team, and industrial demonstrators and prototypes will be produced.
