PROJECT DETAILS:
CarbiCrete is a Quebec-based company that has developed a technology to eliminate the use of cement in concrete production, which represent 8% of total global GHG emissions. CarbiCrete’s technology replaces cement with steel slag, a by-product of steel production, and through a mineralization reaction, permanently binds CO₂ within concrete products. The CarbiCrete process involves the injection of CO₂ into a curing chamber, where it reacts with the steel slag present in the fresh concrete, resulting in the conversion of CO₂ into stable calcium carbonates.
CarbiCrete’s first commercial application, concrete blocks, was introduced in 2023 through a partnership with Patio Drummond. Given the favorable reception of this low-carbon material, CarbiCrete intends to expand its portfolio of sustainable concrete products in continued collaboration with Patio Drummond.
This project aims to develop six new CarbiCrete products, consisting of two products in each of three categories: pavers, slabs, and accessories. The project will serve as a model by offering Quebec consumers a decarbonized concrete product and by providing local concrete manufacturers with clean technology. This innovative solution not only helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions while valorizing industrial waste but also promotes clean infrastructure and supports Quebec’s greenhouse gas reduction targets.
